It's time to futureproof Ballina Hospital

Whilst we applaud the $1.29 billion investment into the redevelopment of the Northern NSW Local Health District, Ballina has seen only a fraction of that funding. Ballina is one of the fastest-growing regional communities in NSW, with a large population of older Australians and more than 18,000 people presenting to the Emergency Department last year alone.

Our hospital has already been evacuated twice in three years due to extreme weather events. With climate change driving more frequent and severe disasters and demand for health services continuing to grow, Ballina District Hospital is simply not fit for purpose.

Too many patients are left waiting, not only in emergency but also for aged care beds, follow-up support, and essential medical services. Our frontline health workers are stretched to breaking point, and our community deserves far better.

We are calling for:

  1. Substantial direct investment in Ballina District Hospital to deliver modern, climate-resilient infrastructure that can withstand future disasters.
  2. Expanded staffing, resources and facilities to meet the pressing healthcare needs of our rapidly growing community.
  3. Fair and consistent funding for regional hospitals so that quality healthcare is guaranteed, not determined by a postcode lottery.

The people of Ballina deserve a hospital that can meet today’s needs, withstand tomorrow’s challenges, and deliver world-class care into the future.
